BASF and lobbying group Beyond Suncare have welcomed the decision by the World Health Organization (WHO) to list sunscreen as ‘Essential Medicine’.
Broad-spectrum sunscreens with high SPF are included in the 24th edition of the Model List of Essential Medicines (EML) and the 10th edition of the Model List of Essential Medicines for Children (EMLc).
The inclusion will encourage countries to prioritize sunscreen in their health systems, improving access and affordability.
“The decision to list broad-spectrum sunscreens to the list of ‘Essential Medicine’ underlines the importance of safe and effective sun protection products,” said Dr Ulrich Issberner, Director Market Development Suncare at BASF.
“It empowers producers of sunscreens and UV-filter ingredients to promote and defend their products in an environment of changing regulations and rising scepticism from consumers,” he added.
Since 2014, BASF has been supporting the non-governmental organization Beyond Suncare through expertise in developing and supplying ingredients for highly effective, customized sunscreens for people with albinism in sub-Saharan Africa
Mafalda Soto, executive director of Beyond Suncare, said: “This landmark decision elevates the importance of sun protection for vulnerable populations.
“As we move forward, the collaboration between organizations, healthcare professionals, and advocates will be crucial in ensuring that everyone, especially those with albinism, can access the essential protection they deserve.”
